I read this some 42 years ago. I couldn't remember any of it this go-around, which I'm not sure speaks more to my ADHD or if it the story was that forgettable. Some might suggest the latter simply because this is "pulp fiction" (you have to stick your nose in the air when you say that). Still, its typical Doc Savage, which means its non-stop improbable action and just a fun read (although i tend to cringe more these days at the blatant and not so blatant racism, which was more commonplace 80+ years ago).

This book includes Three stories in one book: Wolf in the Fold, Guard Against Dishonor, The Bones of Haven. It is my understanding that all three have been previously published under a different title (Fear and Loathing in Haven) so if you’ve read that, you’ve already read this.Though I’m not usually a sword and sorcery/cop story type of reader, this book surprised me with its wry wit and offbeat humor. I was drawn in from the first line and enjoyed the stories immensely. They are set in a modern medieval world where magic is acceptable, fighting is done with swords (or in the case of Hawk, an axe), and corruption rules the land – or at least, the city of Haven. Hawk and Fisher, husband and wife Guards, are the two best crime fighters in the city. The worst area, the Northeast Corridor, is their beat and nobody crosses them. In a city where crime is the norm, they can’t be bought. Together, they attempt to bring order to chaos.With a plot that is straightforward with just enough of a small twist to keep you interested, characters that are slightly stereotypical, but still fun, this is a lighthearted book that doesn’t take much thought. It’s pure entertainment. The only caveat I offer is one of copyediting. There are enough areas where a good grammarian would have been an asset, but it’s not enough of a problem to completely detract from the enjoyment of the story. If you like sword and sorcery, cops, wizards, and good vs. evil stories, but don’t want to have to work at the story, definitely pick this one up.

The third 'Hawk and Fisher' novel is the sort of thing it feels hard to review fairly: because it's good enough for it to be frustrating that it isn't better. It's hard not to be harsh on it for its flaws - slightness, shallowness, lack of care and polish, and so on - and hard to make clear amid that just how many virtues it has - it's enjoyable, sometimes funny, clever, surprisingly complex (and different!) in its characterisations, genuinely well-written in its set-pieces, at times quite tense, and overall a great deal of fun.As with its predecessors, The God Killer is an odd whodunnit-in-fantasyland genre mash-up, in which Our Heroes, the cynical but good-hearted married cops, Hawk and Fisher, investigate a murder in Waterdeep-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off. This time, it's the little matter of the mysterious murders of three gods (well... beings...) in the city's mind-and-reality-bending Street of Gods, and as a result they have to co-operate with the dedicated 'God Squad' cops - a famous swordsman-adventurer, an embittered druid, and a socially-maladroit wizard. Oh, and there's also some business with a self-replicating sorceror, a brutally sadistic serial killer and a quite literal Hellfire Club.It's great fun, and an intriguing, if not quite enthralling, little puzzle, which Green unfolds for us with an old-fashioned storyteller's dexterity. It perhaps lacks the core brilliant idea of the original Hawk and Fisher, but in all other respects this third installment is a considerable technical improvement on its predecessors. It may actually be a better starting point - although there are throwaway mentions of things related to the earlier cases, you don't really need to have read them to enjoy this, and this only very peripherally 'spoils' the earlier two (and then only if you pay attention and have a good memory for details). So it's a shame that it's not better. This is a very slight novel, both in thematic and in literal weight: less a through-written novel, it almost feels, than a string of great set-pieces that the author has reluctantly attached with hurried scene-changes and infodumps. The plot works, but for the novel to really hit home as hard as it could the author would need to have spent much more time fleshing out the details and allowing the tension and misdirection to build. It's frustrating, because in different ways both this novel and his more substantial Blue Moon Rising show Green's potential as a serious fantasy novelist, yet he seems to have chosen the path of least resistance, churning out novel after novel of fluffy bagatelle that wouldn't be objectionable in the least if he weren't clearly capable of something more. [That said, I've not yet read the sequels to Blue Moon, which I assume will lean in more to his strengths in characterisation and semi-horror].What we're left with is a novel that's unlikely to show up on many to-read lists - "like Pratchett but not as good" or "a weird Forgotten Realms novel written by someone who doesn't know how Forgotten Realms works" aren't descriptions that throw a book to the top of the must-read pile for most people. And that's perfectly right: there's not much reason why, more than twenty years later, people would remember this book.And yet that's also a shame. Because there's an important place for unimportant books. There's a steady stream of enjoyable-but-not-great fantasy churned out by the publishers, and a whole flood of it disgorged by the self-publishing sector, and a lot of readers who enjoy it. And the thing is: I'm pretty sure that The God Killer, for all its flaws, is better than a lot of those books. At the very least... it's more unusual! (in a sort of paradoxically cliché fashion).So if you're looking for an Important Classic, stay away. But if you're a fan of fantasy, and perhaps a fan of murder mysteries or police procedurals as well, and you're looking for a quick read that's only a couple of hundred pages that's at once comfortingly familiar and pleasantly unexpected, you could honestly do a lot worse than pick up The God Killer. Elsewhere is moody. It's from the viewpoint of young people who have dropped out and live on the streets, forming their own families and relationships. I don't especially feel comfortable with the idea of kids living this way, but that's one of the best things about reading. You get to see different worlds, lives, existences, and realize that humans are all the same, no matter what kind of lives they live.Ron came to the Bordertown to find his older brother. He was living in denial, and this trip helped him to find himself, to let go of notions about who he was and what was important in life. I liked seeing him go through that evolution.It was interesting how his name changed as his personality, or should I say who he thought he was, went through transitions. It was kind of ironic that he found peace within when his last manifestation would have seemed the most unfortunate. He found a family in the place he least expected it, but he sort of came full circle. To say more would be spoil the book.This is a thoughtful book, with the capacity to inspire deep emotions in a reader. I picked it up because I am intensely interested in stories about Faerie, and this book is very good for those who like Faerie. Along with those elements is a deep story that gives a little more along with the surface fantastical elements. This book is about how we think we express our identities, purpose, bonds of loyalty and affection. How a person takes all those ingredients and uses them to become who they are meant to be, if they can make it through the painful metamorphosis that leads to the final state: that of the butterfly who emerges from its chrysalis, not without a lot of pain and effort.

The Chronicles of Morgaine is one of the tattiest, most worn out and dogeared books on my shelf - I own a 1986 edition of this and it has survived about six house moves, numerous car-boot-sale culls and a protracted period in a cardboard box in a loft during the 1990's - and it is probably the most read of my books. Maybe not every year or even two years, but in the last 15 or so years it has done faithful service. I really love the story - Chronicles (a collection of three books) and the sequel Exile's Gate. You might be forgiven for thinking this is a bit of a sword &amp; sandal Conan &amp; Sonja saga - nothing like it! It owes far more, I suspect, to Arthurian legend than anything and there isn't a bulging loincloth to be found. What more to be said? the plot is long and linear, based as it is around an ill-fated quest; there are battles and travails aplenty, but none of that really matters. Once you "get it" you realise that the *real* story is about the developing relationship, uneasy at first, between the two protagonists; the fey, unpredictable and beautiful Morgaine and her faithful warrior servant, young, persistent and flawed Vanye. To say much more would spoil it, but the development of these two characters and how they interact is what makes this story what it is. Until you realise that you may find that it drags somewhat because there's a lot more "jaw jaw" than "war war". After a couple of abortive first attempts, I fell in love with the story and (as a greying 40 something I blush to admit...) with Morgaine. I only wish Cherryh had written a few more of these.
